About this Presenter
Jay Moncada is a 3rd generation gems trader with roots in Colombia, birthplace of the finest emeralds in the world. In the 1950s, Jay’s grandfather started a small but successful jewelry and watch business. In the 1980s, Jay’s uncle expanded the family business into wholesaling of Colombian emeralds right from the heart of the trade in Bogota. In the 1990s, Jay’s father joined the emerald trade after running many successful companies in the manufacturing sector.
Jay’s passion for the world of gems didn’t blossom until he attended his first Tucson Gem Show as a teenager in 1995. The rich multicultural environment, and the immense variety of the mineral world felt like nothing short of magical. His interests grew, and after a few more visits to Tucson he moved to New York City to pursue his Graduate Gemology Degree from GIA. Jay’s experiences with GIA and his family business allowed him many opportunities to train with prominent players in New York on all aspects of the trade: sourcing, quality and value, industry trends and marketing. While completing his BBA degree, Jay expanded his experience at some of the largest gem shows around the world while developing his niche in the US: servicing the emerging American designer market, a constantly innovative and ground-breaking segment of the industry.
After more than 25 years of experience in the jewelry industry, Jay fell in love with period jewelry, the romance and historicity of antique gems. In search of a better offering to the market, he found interest in the unique story and sustainable quality of antique gems to later start Perpetuum Jewels in 2011.
Jay is dedicated to elevate sustainable practices in his trade community by educating and inspiring customers to develop products that can communicate values above and beyond trade and consumer expectations. He currently serves on the board and is treasurer of Ethical Metalsmiths and is part of the Jewelry Glossary Project.
Jay is passionate about family and is a proud Dad of two amazing boys for which he plans to leave a true sustainable legacy.
